Freelance Peril: Skill Stagnation

Sure, you're hearing a lot about freelancing as THE solution for the over-50. You might have been forced out of your job and it's near impossible to land another one. But, unlike full-time positions, contracting usually has no professional development. The result: skill stagnation. That makes you unmarketable in a labor market mutating daily. I discuss this downside of freelancing on Substack . As an intuitive career coach/tarot reader I uncover the opportunities/obstacles in your earning power that others miss. Boomer/Gen Xer Nest Eggs - Tariff Skid Loses Momentum

The stock market runs primarily on emotion. The feeling is that the new administration is open to input on tariffs. For example, it just delayed imposing tariffs on Mexico for a month. More adjustments could follow. So, the investments of boomers and members of gen x have not collapsed. The market opened down over 500 point. Now, things aren't looking so bad. 44,499.26 USD ▼  -45.40 (-0.10%) today February 3, 11:23 AM EST  ·  Market Open Low on hope about finding, holding, or moving on to better work?  Getting that back is the first step. The Great Souring - Tariffs Turn Off the World, Hits Will Be Serious in US

We don't trust the legacy news. But we do pore over the comments posted following the articles they publish. That's how we gain clarity about what could be going on.  So far, the almost 540 comments to the Yahoo Finance coverage of how the movers and shakers are assessing the impacts of tariffs are primarily negative. And not only about tariffs. The posters also share their disappointment/outrage about what the new US President Donald Trump has enacted so far.  This kind of response is resonating among my career coaching clients in Canada. One even made the abrupt decision to shift from a job in private industry to government. They anticipate a recession which could kick in within several months in Canada. Around the world there is dismay. Another signal of the souring mood is that the Yahoo Finance article itself contains pessimism by those interviewed. Usually those kinds of players play it safe when making public statements. For example, EvercoreISI Economics team notes: ...

Jersey Journal 1867 - 2025: A Blue-Collar City Gentrifies Beyond Local News

In pre-gentrified blue-collar Jersey City, New Jersey, the Jersey Journal served as the formal grapevine.  Launched as the Evening Journal in 1867 it introduced new gossip and confirmed what was already being buzzed about. It was a must-read, especially for obituaries. My extended immigrant family planned their evenings around attending wakes for those who had passed over. The biggest fear was that your family's secrets would be exposed in the Jersey Journal.  Before I left Jersey City in 1963 to attend a college in Pennsylvania on a scholarship my dream was to return to start out as a reporter on the Jersey Journal. Those were the days when you still could major in English, without being mocked. But the 1960s had been the era of blind faith in higher education. Directly from college I went on to receive a free ride to study for my doctorate at an Ivy League. It wasn't until the mid 1970s that I tried journalism and it wasn't at the Jersey Journal. But I continued to keep u...

Nowhere to Go - Another Golden Age of Entrepreneurship

Image
The shift was abrupt. One day those in a professional niche are marketable. If they became unhappy with work conditions they could simply hunt for another opportunity. That includes both employees and those contracted to provide services. BINARY LABOR MARKET Now, the labor market is hardening into a binary state. There are those who remain marketable, such as the powerhouse partner brandnames in large law firms such Kirkland & Ellis, Skadden and Paul Weiss. And then there are those, ranging from specialists in DEI to providers of woo-woo services/products, who, as demand dries up, have nowhere to go. NOWHERE TO GO Politico  features that development for government employees whose knowledge base had been ensuring equitable recruiting, retention and promotion of a diverse workforce. In this mid-sized city in southeastern Arizona, as a career coach, I am bearing witness to the shuttering of services/product vendors related to what is known as "woo-woo." Those could b...

It used to be that you were "done" in the workplace when you were heading toward 65. Now the perception of "old" kicks in at age 50. You are likely to be forced out.
